Just my opinion, but I would rather draft goalies in volume. One never knows where the best NHL goalie will come from it seems.

Nice read We should draft one every year. Seems the Sabres try and hang on to their goalies once a gem comes along. Makes sense to get a bunch stock piled as the odds of getting that so called starter get better. As far as moving up, guess it depends on who or what we have already. If the needed forward is available we take him and look at another round for the goalie. We have the prospects now and this years goalie won't be a thing for another 4-6 years from now.

Given the goalies we already have in the stable, the Sabres needs in the first round are at other positions. Though I might look for something with potential later in the draft, there is NO WAY I would dedicate a first round pick to the goalie position.

i say no thanks to a 1st round goalie.. rounds 3 - 6 pick one or two goalies every year.

I wouldn't trade back into the first round to take a goalie. I would rather try and use all three seconds to move back to the middle of the round and try and steal a player who has dropped.

100% Bubba.

The Oilers thought they were really clever and stuck with 2 (Devan Dubnyk and Jeff Drouin Deslariers)....that worked out badly, but fortunately the had 2 other guys in Tyler Bunz and Olivier Roy....

I have a Theory that is similar to the Glengarry Glenross sales competition. Have a dozen goalies, 6 of which are in College, Jr or Europe, and aside from your NHL starter , make sure your goalies are playing where they should at whatever stage of their development they are.
Every year, someone gets released, and some one new comes in. Maybe over simplified, but I want 5 guys competing for the next promotion at all times.

All depends on what the plan is.

I'm a firm believer that getting a guy who is the best or highest rated at a position (especially one of need) is never a bad idea. However there is no telling how high Demko could go. Could be anywhere from mid 1st to 2nd round.

If they were to move up to say 25 to get the best goalie in the draft I wouldn't hate them for it

problem is there is eventually not enough nets to plug all these goalies into- therefor no chance to develop any of them.

as of now you have Hackett, Lieuwan, Makarov, and eventually Ullmark and Peterson. All at similar stages of their careers. you basically have to guess right because there isnt enough spots to play them all. Knapp basically got lost in the shuffle because he failed in a small sample size and never was given an opportunity to develop.

I would not trade up for a goalie this draft. Use a second for one if you want a guy badly. I don't think a goalie goes in the first round. Also Nedljekovic doesn't play for Portland.

this is their pipeline after enroth and neuvirth...a quick note, knapp probably will be in Elmira if he's in the sabres organization at all

The rest line up like this (by age):
•Matt Hackett, 24 yrs old, 2009 3rd round (No. 77) MIN
•Connor Knapp, 23, 2009 6th round (No. 164) BUF
•Nathan Lieuwen, 22, 2011 6th round (No. 167) BUF
•Andrey Makarov, 21, 2012 FA, BUF
•Linus Ullmark, 20, 2012 6th round (No. 163) BUF
•Cal Peterson, 19, 2013 5th round (No. 129) BUF

If he is there at 31 draft him.

If he is not draft another goalie in the 3rd rd. Or use one of your seconds to trade for a young tender.

There's nothing wrong with that. It creates competition, which is what you want. Someone is going to be the odd man out. You can't live in fear of whether or not the guy you release might turn into a star player.

Never blame yourself!

Always assume the customer (reader) is wrong and accuse them of being an idiot.

Were you around for the add a late first idiot incident?
